• I am Isabel Ruigrok, and from a young age, I have been drawn to painting as a means to preserve memories. Not just as images, but as evidence of the time, effort, and love invested in each creation. In a world where my generation can instantly record life with a phone, I find deeper meaning in the deliberate process of making art. Each piece is a memory made tangible, a reflection of my existence and the experiences that have moved me.

My inspiration comes from the tension between tradition and modernity, and from the desire to hold onto memories that might otherwise fade. A found Polaroid photo on the streets in Palermo became a catalyst for my work. I painted it on a large scale and transformed a black-and-white image with imagined vibrant colours. I am blending my own nostalgia with the anonymous memory. Through this process, I began to question the boundaries between personal and collective memory, and between what is lived and what is imagined.

I am fascinated by how nostalgia can reshape reality, and I ask: What happens when you include images that are not your own in your personal archive? Can you come to believe you know these people? I am exploring how nostalgia in art can personally engage viewers and create connections through universal feelings.

  • Through my work, I strive to blur the lines between the personal and the universal, inviting others to find connection in shared nostalgia. I want to foster a sense of togetherness and transform uncertainty into collective memory.
